Beta Forever?

Jessica had some obvious problems switching this blog from the old Blogger to the new Blogger Beta. She's not the only one who has blogged about Blogger Beta problems.

Now, I'm a big fan of the concept of "beta is forever," which has become one of the defining principles of Library 2.0. But releasing a product or service in beta that causes more frustrations, and more frustrated public blog posts, doesn't do anyone much good. I'm not saying everything has to work perfectly, but there should be more positives than negatives. When Firefox 2 came out, there were some problems (heck, my own upgrade on our family computer went much less than smoothly, making me a very cranky and unhappy camper), but in general, the responses I saw to it (and my own overall feelings about it) were positive.

I've really tried to apply "beta is forever" and good beta practices a part of my regular work at my library. When we're planning new programs and services and hammering out all of the details, I think it's important to keep in mind, and the remind everyone else, that what we present to the public doesn't have to be perfect, the final product. But it does have to be good, and we shouldn't put something out that's half-assed and a dollar short.

What does everyone else think about "beta is forever"? In what ways have you (or could you) apply it to your regular work? In what way can it be practically applied to librarianship in general? And in what ways is it a bad idea?

EDIT: In trying to set up "labels" for this post, I got a bunch of error messages that basically tell me the new Blogger doesn't handle tagging all that well.

  • At my library we're in the midst of big changes, including a redesigned website, new ERMs, federated search--you name it. Things will continue to change as technology allows and I think we're offering really great improvements. The problem I see with beta forever is that our most permanent patron group--faculty--hate change. Students come and go and deal with change, but it's a big challenge to explain that we're trying to make things easier while at the same time making no promises that our systems won't continue to change over time.

  • As a person who is pretty tech savvy and loves the internet/social software/just messing around, I think change is good. I think that libraries, and librarians, need to change with the times in order to address their patron's wants and needs.

But, I admit, that on some levels I am an "if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it" kinda person, especially when it comes to computer apps that really do get the job done as-is. I just now switched over to Windows XP because I liked 2000 Professional just fine, thank you very much...

In terms of Blogger BETA, I think my problem is that it was a huge change, all at once. I think many of the changes are great - for new/inexperienced users. But many of the changes just didn't seem to take into consideration at all the MANY people who have been using Blogger for YEARS, and now find themselves unable to post consistently (if they host on their own ISP), and unable to take advantage of some of the goodies unless they start from scratch. So, it seems to me that Blogger is now really a tool that is fully "useful" only for "beginners."

Oh blah blah blah. I have taught myself WordPress and TypePad, I am interested in Drupal, so it's not like I am stuck, here. It's just that I LIKED Blogger's ease, and the fact that if I didn't need a multi-page platform, and was looking to put something together fast (or for someone else) it was easy. And it still is. It just sucks if it's not hosted on Blogspot. I'll get over it.

Change is good. Moving forward is good.

  • You both hit on two interesting points I'd like to respond to:

    1) If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think improving services is a good thing. But if a service doesn't need improving, then don't mess with it. Tweaking it, sure. Outright changing it? Not so much. On the other hand, adding more services, making the overall package easier and better to use? A good thing.

    2) Big changes. I think it's better to make small changes, little by little, and release updates and improvements often, rather than making one big "Beta Upgrade" with lots of big changes. For one thing, as you pointed out, Jessica, it messes with familiarity and ease to suddenly have something you're used to change dramatically. For another thing, it means there's more for the developers to keep track of and fine tune, more bugs to watch out for, and a bigger possibility that it won't all work well.

  • On what Josh said, I think that staff and customers alike can handle small changes fairly well, but when you throw a big one - even if it is perceived but not actually big - you get some balking. I call it "baby steps" and I've been doing things that way as a manager for years. People don't mind the baby steps.

On a riff here - actually when you think about it, when you are going through a change process you don't get from Point A to Point Z in one massive lightningbolt of a super idea. It is an ongoing process. It makes perfect sense that people would have some problems making the leap without seeing the small steps on the way.

Re: Blogger Beta -- I'm cool with it. I don't mind the change and I don't know what the fuss is about.

  • From a "this would be a great upgrade/addition/new function" standpoint, Blogger BETA came up with some nice options. The only reason I'm fussing is because not only do the changes NOT translate if you host the blog yourself, the publishing function is all messed up (see Josh's comment about adding labels). My Cool Librarian blog, which is a Blogspot-hosted blog, made the transition fine - my self-hosted blogs did not. In the end it hasn't been a huge deal, but everytime I get a publishing error message, I get a little annoyed....
